To commemorate the magnanimity of Houstonians’ resilient and altruistic response to Hurricane Harvey, I painted this monumental, human-scale, eight-panel, oil-on-canvas portrait of my fellow volunteers from a photo I took on my iPhone. This group worked together seamlessly accepting donations outside NRG Center the day after Harris County Judge Ed Emmett and BakerRipley CEO Angela Blanchard opened a shelter there to care for people impacted by the storm. These volunteers exemplify the whole-hearted spirit that emerged all over the city and carried Houston through those dark, anxious days. Since April 2017, the painting has been exhibited at Bush Intercontinental Airport, NRG Center, George R. Brown Convention Center, Houston Foodbank, Memorial Middle School and Strake Jesuit College Preparatory. I subsequently donated That was Harvey. This is Houston. to the Houston Foodbank, where it was permanently and beautifully installed by DCM Art Services in June 2020.
